“For a long time distinctions between rumor, allegations, and hard news about individual misbehavior have haunted the press. “Todays news” easily becomes tomorrow’s error, and no item in a “Corrections” box or any counter-story the next day will often undo the damage to personal reputation that some mere accusations inflict” The Media & Morality commentary by Donald W Shriver Jr.

In August 2004, Pastor Meade’s faith was severely tested when a tabloid newspaper published an article, which cited a malicious rumor in circulation at that time. Pastor Meade spent several months doing missionary work in Africa and the article cast aspersions on his activities there, hinting at possible illegal involvements.
It is amazing how local gossip or “ole talk” could have such a catastrophic effect. Following the publication, Pastor Meade has been the subject of character assassination with his only crime that of being in Africa at the time of circulation.
Pastor Meade who celebrated his 52nd birthday last year, shepherds the World Outreach Church Ministries on Morne Coco Rd., Petit Valley. He has been pastoring for the past nineteen years leaving behind a life of drugs and crime. He attributes his conversion to a divine encounter with God while lying dead in the morgue for two and a half days, following a vehicular accident which left him crippled. Meade now fully recovered often refers to himself as “a man sent by God”.
Ironically, as fate would have it, in October 2006 the American Press reported another Carl Meade, 44 had been charged by DC police with the first-degree murder of Edward Small who was killed in 1996. When asked if he was aware of this fresh coincidence involving his identity, he laughed heartily, a testimony to a full recovery and in response said, “but, he is white” explaining that “the Meades in the US are white”. However, he admitted that the first ordeal was very painful for his family. News of the first story spread like wild fire and many churchgoers grew suspicious of his long absence. Several of his members never returned. Meade spent seven months preaching at various venues in Africa between August 2004-2005.
Brother Joseph Nvumbi, an eyewitness at several venues in Africa denied the allegations insisting, “That’s not true.”
Elder Nicholas Constantine the church overseer in Pastor Meade’s absence, a missionary who served on the LOGOS II for four years was contacted by the newspaper reporter to validate the story. However, although his denial was quoted, the inclusion of the rumor was sufficiently damaging.
Church members also confirmed that Pastor Meade addressed the congregation while in Africa by telephone with the aid of modern technology while others reported communicating with him via email during the period in question. Idid, it really was an unfortunate situation, people can sometimes be very fickle at times. So we shouldn't be quick to cast judgment on mere hearsay. Don't you agree?
