Gayelle producer, Errol Fabien commemorates twenty years of drug free living on March 1 with a “Freedom March” from Icacos to Port of Spain.
In a television interview with Julian Rogers, Fabien shared his journey on the road to recovery. A touching story of one man’s battle with addiction and his return to sanity and sobriety. A fitting reminder that drug addicts are human beings trapped in a self-destructive cycle in need of help. In his reflections, Fabien spoke of the love and support of family and friends and the willingness of the national community to give him a second chance.
Fabien’s inspirational story should not go unheard but act as a beacon of hope to persons bound by the chains of addiction as well as encouragement to their loved ones.
The road to recovery from addiction is by no means an easy one and for every success story there are many who were unable to rise above the menace, which claimed their lives. Indeed, it is stories such as these, which send a strong message to those afflicted to keep pressing on while reminding the national community of its role and responsibility in the recovery process.
It is hoped that as we continue to witness the lowering of the age of users, with nine and ten year olds now experimenting with drug use, that intervention programs would be put in place to restore those who unwittingly are caught in the web of addiction may be returned to wholesome living and society.
It is worth pondering how much longer the region can rationally accommodate voluntary participation in rehabilitative programs as a practical solution.
And in light of the ongoing discussions on constitution reform here in Trinidad & Tobago, the question may well be asked what provision should be made for the detention and treatment of persons bound by the chains of drug addiction.
