Guatemala women targeted by violent street gangs

Guatemala's murder rate is one of the highest in Latin America. Official figures show that an average of 17 people are killed there every day.

The number of women murdered is also rising rapidly. Authorities blame the killings on street gangs.

Rights groups say the government is not doing enough to protect women. Culturally, women are seen as inferior to men, so there are fewer consequences for crimes against them. Teresa Bo reports from Guatemala City.

Developing nations' appeals unheard at UN

More than 140 countries have agreed on a blueprint to respond to the global economic crisis.

The paper calls for the inclusion of developing countries in finding solutions to the financial meltdown.

But some say the 15-page document is short on specifics, and has been undercut by indifference from the world's largest economies.

Al Jazeera's Cath Turner reports from the United Nations.

Peru protests fuel regional tensions

Peru's government plans to overturn controversial land laws that led to deadly fighting between police and Amazon tribes this month.

Those clashes exacerbated tensions between Peru and neighbouring Bolivia whose indigenous president, Evo Morales, accused the Peruvian government of genocide against tribal protesters. Craig Mauro reports.

Inequity of Haitian refugees in Mexico

The UN says that at least 42 million people have fled their homes last year because of conflict or persecution.

Mexico is considered to have one of the most open refugee policies and as a result it has become a popular destination for many Haitians who fled their country.

But as Al Jazeera's Mariana Sanchez discovered, despite government help many are facing economic hardship and discrimination.

Coca-growing in Peru's Amazon

Parts of Peru's Amazon jungle are being cleared in order to produce cocaine. Over 3 million hectares of forest have been destroyed to grow coca, the crop used to make cocaine.

Peruvian soldiers try to stop the spread of cocaine labs, but such efforts are met with mixed results. Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo reports.

The swine flu threat

The UN has warned that the virus has the potential to become a pandemic, but said the world was better prepared than ever to deal with the threat. Is the threat as serious as it may seem? Is this the pandemic that could wipe out half the world's population? Or is it a world wide panic exacerbated by the media?
